THE MOON

A  lua  fascina a  humanidade desde  os  tempos mais  antigos , e  sempre  tem  sido objeto  de  interesses , quer na  ciência  , quer de  corações  apaixonados  , ou ainda das  crendices  populares . Diz-se  , por  exemplo ,  que  na  lua  aumenta a  ocorrência de  eventos  de  violência e  até  de  partos  naturais , Será  que  existe um  fundo de  verdade  nisso ?  (   verificar   próxima   lua  cheia )

The  moon has  a profound  effect on  our  minds , In fact , people  have attributed special  powers to the  moon for  thousands of  years . If you  ask the doctors  and  nurses of  hospital emergency wards they will say , “ There  must be  a  full moon  tonight ! It´s so busy . “

LEGENDS

The Moon   fascinate us   . It has a mystical place in   human   culture   .  There   are myths   of   werewolves   ,   madness   and   transformation  .  A   synonym   for   madness   is   lunacy   . An insane   person   is   a   lunatic  .  This   is   derived   from the   Latin word   for   the   MOON   : Luna .

DANGEROUS

What   effects   does   the   MOON   have ?  Legend  says  that  more  mothers  give  birth on  the  night of a  full moon , more  car  accidents occurs , and people  are  crazier  and  more  violent .  Some  people  say the  Moon  increases  the  electrical  charge in  our  bodies . There   are  more  emergency  patients . Sufferers of   epilepsy   have   more   agitated   and   violent  . Violent   crimes   and   suicide   rates   increase   .  Ovulation   peaks with   the   full moon  .  And  human  emotional and  physical  cycles  coincide with  the  Moon`s 28-day  lunar  cycle .

How   can we   explain   these   apparent effects  ?  One  explanation  is  that  our  bodies  are  like  the  oceans . The   Moon and   the   gravitational   forces   cause   the   tides  .  Our  bodies   contain  a  hight  percentage  of  water , so  this  water  is  also affected  by  the  Moon .

SCIENCE

What does   science   say   about   this   ? An  ocean  is  enormous  and  the  physical  effect  of  the  Moon  is  relatively  small . Scientists  suggest  that  the  effect  of  the  Moon on  our  bodies  is almost  zero . The   myths   are   probably   from the   historical   times   .  There   was  no  artificial lighting    .  So the  full moon filled  the  night  sky  with  light and it  probably  disturbed  people`s  sleep . Sleep  deprivation  can  exaggerate  abnormal  behavior  in  mental  patients  and  cause  epileptic  crises .

POLITICS

Even  if  most  studies suggest  there is  no  relation  between  the  lunar  cycle  and accidents , emergencies  or  births , we continue to blame our misfortune on the Moon  ! In the year 2000 , for  example , commentators  suggested  that  the  USA  presidential  election  was  affected by  the  full  moon .  This   was   the    explanation  for  President Bush`s  victory !

DID YOU KNOW

The  orbit  of   the  Moon  around  the  Earth is  an ellipse  and  is  completed  in 27  days , 7  hours , 43 minutes , and 11,6  seconds .  The   Moon`s   orbital period  is   called  a  sidereal month .  

A lunar  month  ( the synodic  month )  is  29,5  days .  Why   ?  Because   the  Earth  is  also orbiting  the  sun . The  lunar  cycle  measure  from the  one  new moon  to the  next  moon  ( passing  through  each phase : new , half , full  moon ,  )  is  more  than  360 degrees .

Only one  face  of  the  Moon , the “near side “ is  visible  to  us . The   dark side or “ far side “ is  permanently  rotated  away  from  our  planet .

The Moon rises in the   east   and   sets   in  the  west .

It is 384.400 km   from   the   Earth .

The   Moon   average   speed   is   3,683 km per   hour .

The   distance   travelled in one   orbit is   2.290.000 km .
